This post highlights the suggested changes required to enable users of OBIEE prior to 11.1.1.7.140527 release to use Internet Explorer 11 ( IE 11 ), which is not officially supported by Oracle. This test was carried out using OBIEE release 11.1.1.6.12.
IE Developer Tools
Following of deployment of IE11 the IE11 Developer tools report an error ( see screenshot below ). This issue was solved by applying. Windows patch “Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 (KB3008923)” is installed http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=45134
Unable to Edit Group Policy
When attempting to use the group policy editor, to enable the users to choose “enterprise mode” within IE, launching the tool you see the following error :-
This error prevents you navigating to >> Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer. This does not exist, hence unable to set the properties to enable IE11 enterprise mode.
To resolve this download the new Admin templates from
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/confirmation.aspx?id=40905
- This will download a file KB2841134.zip, unzip to a folder.
- Take ownership of c:\windows\policydefintions\inetres.admx – ensure you have read/write permissions to this file
- Take ownership of c:\windows\policydefintions\en-US\InetRes.adml – ensure you have read/write permissions to this file
- Copy inetres.admx from the root folder to c:\windows\policydefintions
- Copy inetres.adml from the en-US folder to c:\windows\policydefintions\en-US
Restart the group policy editor, you should now be able to edit and enable the users to allow “enterprise” mode to be selected within the Tools menu within IE 11
Enabling OBIEE to use Enterprise Mode in IE 11
Officially IE11 is not supported on this release of OBIEE, first official supported release being OBIEE 11.1.1.7.140527. I believe I have proven a workaround which may help, which seems to make most of the functionality work using an IE11 browser.
Details of workaround :-
· Install latest IE 11 release
· Add OBIEE 11.1.1.6.12 URL’s to the “compatibility” list within the browser
· Visit http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html and ensure Flash plugin is installed.
· Ensure Windows patch “Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 (KB3008923)” is installed http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=45134. Be sure to apply to correct patch, there are 32 and 64 bit versions of this patch, the link here is the 32 Windows 7 Release.
· Enable “Enterprise Mode” within the browser. The detail for exactly how this can be enabled can be seen on the Microsoft references below. Essentially we can force IE11 to use “Enterprise” Mode for specific website addresses i.e. all OBIEE 11.1.1.6.12 instances. This configuration can be held centrally on a Webserver. Each time a user attempts to enter a website deemed to require IE8 support enabled, the website address is added to the configuration file on a centrally held web server. Details on how this could be achieved are all below :-
o https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn640687.aspx — enabling Enterprise Mode
o https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn640699.aspx — configuring Enterprise Mode availability
· Once enabled, users should then see they are able to force a website to open using enterprise mode :-
